What is video transcription?
Video transcription turns the speech in a video into written text. A good transcript captures every spoken word, splits it into readable sentences and paragraphs, and — for subtitles — records exactly when each line is said, so it can appear on screen at the right moment.
People used to type transcripts by hand, at four to six hours of work per hour of video. Speech recognition does the same job in minutes. Corbeia uses OpenAI's Whisper model, one of the most accurate speech recognition systems available, and then cleans up its output: it joins words into proper sentences, breaks subtitle lines at natural pauses, and removes the repeated phrases speech models sometimes invent during silence or music.

How do I transcribe a video to text for free?

Is it really free and unlimited?
Yes. Transcription, translation and every export format are free, with no limit on how many files or how many hours you transcribe. No sign-up needed.
Is my video uploaded anywhere?
No. Your browser decodes the audio and runs the speech model on your own computer, so the file never leaves your device. Only the finished subtitle lines are sent to Google Translate, and only if you choose to translate.
How can it be free?
Because your computer does the work. Cloud transcription services pay for servers every minute you upload, so they charge you per minute. We pay nothing per video, so we charge nothing per video.
How accurate is the transcription?
Corbeia uses OpenAI's Whisper speech recognition model, which handles accents, background noise and technical terms well. Clear audio with one speaker at a time gives the best results.
Which files work?
Anything your browser can play: MP4, MOV, M4A, MP3, WAV, WebM, OGG and FLAC — so it works as a video to text, MP4 to text and audio to text converter. For other formats, convert to MP4 first or use the Windows app.
Which languages are supported?
Speech recognition auto-detects 35+ languages, including English, Spanish, Portuguese, French, German, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Hindi and Arabic. Subtitles can be translated into any of them.
How long does it take?
It depends on your computer. Chrome or Edge on a desktop uses your graphics card and is fastest; without one, it runs on the CPU and takes longer. The first run also downloads the speech model once — after that it starts instantly.
What do I get?
An SRT subtitle file, a WebVTT file, a plain-text transcript and a Markdown transcript — plus translated and bilingual SRT files when you pick a translation language.
Is there a desktop app?
Yes. Corbeia for Windows is a free download for Windows 10 and 11 (64-bit, about 473 MB). It runs the large Whisper model for higher accuracy, uses your NVIDIA graphics card when you have one, reads almost any video or audio format, handles hours-long files and works offline. A Mac app is on the way.
Windows says "Windows protected your PC" — is Corbeia safe to install?
Yes. Microsoft SmartScreen shows that message for new apps it hasn't seen many downloads of yet. Click More info, then Run anyway. Corbeia installs just for your Windows user, without administrator rights, and can be removed any time from Settings → Apps.
Is there a watermark?
Your video is never touched. The free subtitle files include a short "Made with Corbeia" line at the very start and end, which Corbeia Pro removes.
