SRT to text, explained

Turn an SRT file into a plain text file

An SRT file is already text, but it's built for video players, not for people. Every subtitle has a number and a timing line, and sentences are broken across short lines:

1
00:00:01,000 --> 00:00:03,200
So the first thing I want

2
00:00:03,200 --> 00:00:05,800
to show you is the dashboard.

Converting SRT to TXT removes the numbers and timing lines, strips formatting tags, and joins the pieces back into sentences:

So the first thing I want to show you is the dashboard.

Why convert an SRT file to text

  • Read or quote a video โ€” get the script of a lecture, a talk or an interview.
  • Summarize with AI โ€” clean text uses far fewer tokens than an SRT full of timestamps.
  • Blog posts and show notes โ€” reuse what you said on camera.
  • Translation and proofreading โ€” work on the words without breaking the timing format.

Three text layouts

LayoutBest for
ParagraphsReading, AI summaries, articles
One line per subtitleChecking subtitles line by line, scripts
Keep timestampsFinding where something was said

No SRT yet?

If you have the video but no subtitle file, skip a step: video to text transcribes the video with AI and gives you the text directly, and the SRT file generator creates the subtitles if you need those too.

SRT to TXT FAQ

How do I convert an SRT file to text?

Drop the .srt file into the converter above. It is converted instantly โ€” download the .txt file or copy the text.

Does it remove the timestamps and numbers?

Yes. The subtitle numbers, timestamps and formatting tags such as <i> are removed, leaving only the words. Choose Keep timestamps if you want a short time marker in front of each line.

What is the difference between Paragraphs and One line per subtitle?

Paragraphs joins the subtitles into flowing text and starts a new paragraph at longer pauses, so it reads like a transcript. One line per subtitle keeps each subtitle on its own line.

Is it free? Is there a watermark?

Free, unlimited and with no watermark. The text is yours.

Is my SRT file uploaded?

No. The file is read and converted by this page in your browser. Nothing is sent anywhere.

Does it work with VTT files?

Yes. WebVTT (.vtt) files convert to text the same way.

My text shows strange characters. What happened?

Older subtitle files are sometimes saved in a legacy encoding. Open the file in a text editor, save it as UTF-8, then convert it again.

I don't have an SRT file yet. Can I get the text straight from a video?

Yes. The video to text tool transcribes a video or audio file with AI and gives you the text directly โ€” free, too.
