SRT files, explained
How an SRT file works
SRT stands for SubRip Subtitle. It's the most compatible subtitle format in the world: a simple text file where each subtitle has a number, a start and end time, and one or two lines of text. (More detail, plus a sample file to download, in our guide What is an SRT file?)
1
00:00:00,500 --> 00:00:03,200
This is the first subtitle.
2
00:00:03,200 --> 00:00:06,000
And this is the second one.The SRT format rules
- Each subtitle starts with a sequence number: 1, 2, 3โฆ
- Times use the format
hours:minutes:seconds, millisecondsโ with a comma, not a dot. - An arrow
-->separates the start and end time. - A blank line ends each subtitle.
Writing all of this by hand takes hours. An SRT file generator does it automatically: Corbeia listens to the speech, writes the text, and gets every timestamp right.
What makes a good SRT file
Subtitles are read while the picture moves, so how the text is split matters as much as the words. Subtitle editors usually aim for:
- Short lines โ one or two lines on screen, so viewers can read them at a glance.
- Breaks at natural pauses โ a subtitle should end where the speaker pauses or a sentence ends, not in the middle of a phrase.
- Time to read โ each subtitle should stay on screen long enough to read, and disappear when the speaker stops.
- Exact timing โ text that appears early or late is distracting, even when the words are right.
Corbeia's SRT file generator follows these rules automatically. It uses the time of every single word, starts a new subtitle at each pause and sentence end, and keeps every subtitle short โ under about 68 characters โ so the result is ready to use without manual splitting.
How to edit an SRT file
Fixing a name or a word takes seconds, because an SRT file is plain text:
- Open it in Notepad (Windows) or TextEdit (Mac, in plain-text mode) and edit the subtitle text. Leave the numbers and times as they are.
- For timing changes, use a free subtitle editor such as Subtitle Edit or Aegisub.
- Save it with UTF-8 encoding so accents and non-Latin scripts display correctly. Corbeia's files are UTF-8 already.
Why creators use SRT files
- Reach โ most social video is watched with the sound off, and captions keep people watching.
- SEO โ YouTube and search engines can read your captions, but not your audio.
- Accessibility โ captions make your videos usable for deaf and hard-of-hearing viewers.
- Translation โ one SRT can be translated into dozens of languages.

SRT file generator FAQ
What is an SRT file?
SRT (SubRip Subtitle) is the most widely supported subtitle format. It is a plain-text file with numbered subtitles, each with a start and end time and the text to display.
How do I generate an SRT file from a video?
Drop the video or audio file into the generator above and click Generate subtitles. Corbeia transcribes the speech with AI and creates a timed .srt file you can download.
Is this SRT file generator free?
Yes โ free, unlimited and with no sign-up. Generate as many SRT files as you like.
Is this an SRT file maker or do I have to type the subtitles?
It makes the SRT file for you. You drop in a video or audio file and AI writes and times every subtitle โ no typing. You can still edit the result in any text editor afterwards.
Which apps can open SRT files?
Almost all of them: YouTube, Vimeo, Facebook, LinkedIn, Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve, Final Cut Pro, CapCut, VLC, Windows Media Player and most smart TVs.
Can I generate SRT files from audio?
Yes. MP3, WAV, M4A and other audio files work the same way as video.
How do I edit the SRT file?
Open it in any text editor (Notepad, TextEdit) to change the words, or in a free subtitle editor like Subtitle Edit to change the timing. Keep the numbers, times and blank lines in place.
What is the difference between SRT and VTT?
They are nearly identical. VTT (WebVTT) is the format web video players use and allows a little extra styling. Corbeia gives you both.
Can I generate an SRT file for a YouTube video?
Yes, if you have the video file โ for example your own upload exported from your editor. Drop the file here, generate the SRT, then upload it in YouTube Studio under Subtitles. Captions you upload yourself are usually far more accurate than YouTube's automatic ones.
How long can the video be?
There is no limit on length or on the number of SRT files you generate. Longer videos take longer because the work happens on your own computer.
Can I generate SRT files in another language?
Yes. Choose a language under Translate to and the generator creates a translated SRT and a bilingual SRT alongside the original.
