VTT to SRT, explained
From WebVTT to SubRip
WebVTT (.vtt) is the subtitle format of the web: HTML5 video, Zoom transcripts and many video sites use it. SRT (.srt) is the format almost every video editor, desktop player and TV understands. Converting VTT to SRT keeps every line and its timing, and rewrites the file in the simpler SRT syntax.
What the converter changes
- Removes the
WEBVTTheader and anyNOTE,STYLEandREGIONblocks. - Numbers every subtitle, starting at 1.
- Rewrites timestamps:
00:01.500becomes00:00:01,500. - Drops cue settings such as
align:start position:10%. - Removes voice and class tags (
<v Anna>,<c.yellow>) but keeps italics, bold and underline.
Before and after
WEBVTT 00:01.000 --> 00:03.500 align:start <v Anna>Welcome to the course.
1 00:00:01,000 --> 00:00:03,500 Welcome to the course.

VTT to SRT FAQ
How do I convert VTT to SRT?
Drop the .vtt file into the converter above. It is converted instantly โ download the .srt file or copy it.
What happens to VTT styling and positions?
SRT is simpler than WebVTT. Positioning settings (align, line, position), CSS class tags and voice tags such as <v Speaker> are removed. <i>, <b> and <u> are kept because SRT players support them.
Are subtitle numbers added?
Yes. SRT needs a number above every subtitle, so they are added in order.
Is the timing kept exactly?
Yes, to the millisecond. Short VTT timestamps like 01:02.500 are written out in full as 00:01:02,500.
Can I convert YouTube or Zoom VTT files?
Yes. Zoom transcripts and caption files downloaded from video sites are usually WebVTT and convert the same way.
Is it free? Is there a watermark?
Free, unlimited and with no watermark.
Is my file uploaded?
No. The conversion happens in your browser and nothing is sent anywhere.
Why would I need SRT instead of VTT?
Video editors (Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve, Final Cut, CapCut), VLC, most smart TVs and many upload forms expect SRT.
