What you get

An SRT file timed line by line

An SRT file is a plain-text list of numbered subtitles, each with a start time, an end time and the text to show. Here is what the start of an SRT made from an MP4 looks like:

1
00:00:01,200 --> 00:00:04,080
Welcome back to the channel.

2
00:00:04,080 --> 00:00:07,640
Today we're going to look at three ways
to edit faster.

Subtitles that are easy to read

Corbeia doesn't just split the transcript every few seconds. Lines break at natural pauses and at the end of sentences, stay short enough to read comfortably, and avoid leaving a single dangling word on the next line.

How to add the SRT to your MP4

  • YouTube: YouTube Studio → Subtitles → Add language → Upload file → With timing.
  • Premiere Pro: File → Import the .srt, then drag it onto the timeline above your video.
  • DaVinci Resolve: File → Import → Subtitle, then drag it onto the timeline.
  • VLC: keep the .srt next to the MP4 with the same file name, or use Subtitle → Add Subtitle File.

Want the subtitles burned into the MP4?

An SRT file is a separate track that viewers can switch on and off. For TikTok, Reels or Shorts you usually want the captions burned into the picture instead:

  • CapCut: Text → Auto captions → Import captions, choose the .srt, style it, then export.
  • HandBrake (free): open the MP4 → Subtitles → Import SRT → tick Burn In → Start Encode.
  • Premiere Pro / DaVinci Resolve: import the SRT onto the timeline, style it, and export — the captions become part of the video.

Fixing common SRT problems

  • Subtitles are out of sync: make sure you made the SRT from the final export of your video. If you trimmed the start of the MP4 afterwards, every subtitle will be late by that amount — generate the SRT again from the edited file.
  • Accents or symbols look broken: the file must be read as UTF-8. Corbeia saves UTF-8; if an old player shows garbled text, choose UTF-8 in its subtitle encoding setting.
  • The player doesn't find the subtitles: give the .srt exactly the same name as the MP4 (for example trip.mp4 and trip.srt) and keep them in the same folder.
  • A word is wrong: open the .srt in Notepad or TextEdit, fix the word and save. Leave the numbers and times as they are.

Why upload an SRT to YouTube

YouTube's automatic captions are often wrong on names and technical words, and they can't be translated reliably. Uploading your own SRT gives viewers accurate captions, lets YouTube index every word you say, and helps your video show up in search for the topics you actually cover.

Translated and bilingual SRT files

Pick a translation language and you get three SRT files from one MP4: the original, a translated version and a bilingual version with both languages in every subtitle — useful for language learners and international audiences.

MP4 to SRT FAQ

How do I convert MP4 to SRT?

Drop the MP4 into the converter above and click Generate subtitles. Corbeia transcribes the speech with AI, times every line, and gives you an .srt file to download.

Is the MP4 to SRT converter free?

Yes. It is free with no limit on the number or length of videos, and no sign-up.

Are the SRT timestamps accurate?

Corbeia uses word-level timestamps from the speech model, then breaks lines at natural pauses and sentence ends, so each subtitle appears while it is being said.

Can I make SRT subtitles in another language from my MP4?

Yes. Choose a language under Translate to. You get the original SRT, a translated SRT and a bilingual SRT with both languages.

Does it burn subtitles into the MP4?

No — it creates a separate .srt file and never changes your video. Load the SRT in your video player or editor, or upload it to YouTube alongside the video.

Can I edit the SRT file afterwards?

Yes. SRT is plain text, so you can open it in any text editor or subtitle editor to fix names or wording.

Can I convert other video formats to SRT?

Yes. MOV, WebM, M4V and most other formats your browser can play work exactly like MP4, and so do audio files such as MP3, M4A and WAV. For formats the browser can't open, such as some MKV or AVI files, the Windows app reads almost anything.

Can I convert MP4 to SRT on my phone?

It works in modern mobile browsers, but phones transcribe much more slowly than computers and can run out of memory on long videos. For anything longer than a few minutes, use a laptop or desktop with Chrome or Edge.

How long can the MP4 be?

There is no length limit. A longer MP4 simply takes longer, and progress is saved as it goes, so you can even close the tab and continue later.
